While the National Hurricane Center watches a system near the Cabo Verde Islands, I’m watching my poor lemon tree. The rain has been relentless this season, and the roots are looking waterlogged. Any suggestions for improving drainage in this soil?

You might try mounding up some soil around the base or digging a small trench to help channel water away, bless this rain—it doesn’t know when to quit. Are the leaves yellowing yet?

Try adding organic matter like pine bark mulch or compost to improve drainage. If it’s in a low spot, consider digging a channel to divert water. My tomatoes are loving the rain, for once.
